OUR HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

First Presbyterian Church of Prosper was organized July 7, 1878 by a group of 26 members who presented a petition to White Rock Presbytery on July 12, 1878. The original name was the McAdew Congregation of Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The congregation first assembled in the Pleasant Valley School House and in 1892 the present church building was erected approximately two miles southeast of where the church now stands.

Our original building was a small, one-room frame building with an organ, pulpit and long homemade pews. In 1896, the building was moved to Rock Hill where the name was changed to Rock Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Church. In 1902 the building was again moved, this time to Prosper where it became known in June 1903 as the Prosper Presbyterian Church. In 1904 the north and south wings were added and in 1939 a basement was dug and the outside was brick-veneered, giving the building its present appearance.

Denominational mergers have changed the name of our Presbytery (the denominational governing body above us) six tines over the years. We have belonged to White Rock, Gutherie, Dallas, Trinity, Grace Union and currently enjoy membership in the Grace Presbytery of The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
